PTO

Parent Teacher Organizations

The PTO provides opportunities for family involvement, supports our teachers’ classroom needs, organizes fundraising events to provide educational supplies and equipment, and engages our community. Each of the eight FSD schools has its own chapter, and each school’s PTO chairs, teachers, and administrators are members of the overall FSD PTO.

We encourage you to get engaged in your school’s PTO! There are many great opportunities to volunteer at your school. Volunteering is the best way to get to know your child’s school and connect with other parents, teachers, and administrators. You don’t have to join the PTO to volunteer, and you don’t have to volunteer if you join the PTO. But we certainly hope you will choose to do both in support of your child and the teachers and staff contributing to their education.

Parent Leadership Council

What is the FSD Parent Leadership Council?

The FSD Parent Leadership Council was formed as a way for the FSD’s eight PTOs to come together to share ideas and address issues that arise within our PTOs.  The council is made up of a representative from each school and meets bimonthly with Dr. Snowden and other FSD administrators. The council members share knowledge so that leading practices can be exchanged and programs can be coordinated among the schools. By working together as an entire district, we make each individual school stronger. It serves as a vehicle to facilitate communication among parents, administration and the school board to ensure the FSD’s continued commitment to excellence in education.

What Does the PLC Do?

The PLC is specifically concerned with:

  • Providing a forum whereby information concerning the educational interests of all students can be freely exchanged and programs can be coordinated among the schools;
  • Addressing the public issues which affect children in and out of the classroom;
  • Acting as an information source for parents as to school district actions and policies;
  • Researching and analyzing educational policy and legislative issues that may impact the district.

What About the School-Based PTOs?
Each of the eight schools has its own Parent-Teacher Organization, which enables parents to become aware of and participate in the educational process. Principals and staff work closely with the PTOs in a supportive relationship to promote mutual understanding between home and school. Each parent is invited to join and participate in the activities and meetings of the PTO. Principals and staff representatives attend regular meetings.

Does the PTO Raise Money?
Fundraising is a major goal of the PTOs. Money raised by each PTO is used to enrich the school in many ways. Schools indicate their priority issues before school begins so parents know exactly where their money will be used within the school.

What else do the PTOs Do?
In addition to fundraising, the school level PTOs lay the groundwork for positive open communication between home and school. The PTOs help organize and implement many student and family activities during the year.

Volunteer Opportunities

The FSD schools always welcome the work and contributions of volunteers and business partners. Volunteers are trained and coordinated in each school, so if you are interested in giving of your time, talent or resources to any of our schools, please contact the school directly. In addition, the district works closely with select community agencies, which places volunteers in our schools through a district coordinator. Please see the information below about our community partners:

Raise Your Hand

Raise Your Hand (RYH) is an initiative of United Way of Greater Nashville that connects students performing below the state standard with volunteer tutors to boost reading and math skills.

Volunteers commit to one hour per week for up to 10 weeks, assisting teachers with reading assignments and tutoring students individually or in small-group sessions. In partnership with each of the school districts, teachers guide volunteers through the tutoring process. No teaching experience is required, and training is provided. Get started!
