Health and Safety
Student and Staff Health
With guidance from our local public health authorities, the following health protocols provide a comprehensive approach to managing illnesses and illness symptoms.
On-Site Nurse Assessment
- If a student develops symptoms of illness during the school day, they will go to the nurse for assessment.
- If the student meets criteria for exclusion based on his/her symptoms, the school nurse will immediately notify the parent/guardian for pick-up. Parents must pick up their students, or arrange for the prompt pick-up of their students.
- Return to school will be based on the FSSD Illness Guidelines (see next section).

Illness Prevention
The FSSD promotes health and wellness in our schools by following the preventative measures below:
Hand Washing
Staff and students are instructed in proper hand-washing, which includes:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
- Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Cover Coughs and Sneezes
Staff and students are instructed in proper respiratory etiquette, which includes:
- Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.
- Throw used tissues in the trash.
- Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Hand sanitizer stations are provided throughout each building.
Clean and/or Disinfect
The Franklin Special School District will continue robust cleaning and/or disinfection practices in all schools and on buses.
Illness Monitoring
School nurses will continue to monitor staff and students to prevent the spread of communicable illness, including COVID-19, in our schools. At home, we encourage you to be alert for symptoms. Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of infectious illness, including COVID-19. Although not required, individuals may choose to wear a mask during the school day.
Plan Monitoring and Accountability
The district has a COVID-19 Response Team and each school site has a trained COVID-19 Response Coordinator. Plans and procedures will be reviewed as needed.
