The mission of the Student Health Services Department is to provide a wide range of medical services in order to promote optimal health so that all students can learn to their full potential and to support the wellness of all the employees of Franklin Special School District. Franklin Special School District’s Student Health Services Department is an integral part of “ Coordinated School Health”, a comprehensive plan established by the State of Tennessee that requires specific criteria to be met and reported annually. Franklin Special School District has established a Wellness Committee with representatives from multiple disciplines. The committee evaluates and monitors all areas of health including physical activity, school nutrition, health screenings, immunizations, illness rates and prevention, psychological needs of students, as well as provides educational programs on health issues for all stakeholders. Feedback is sought from staff and stakeholders using the State of Tennessee School Health Index evaluation tool. Student/parent surveys are also built in to the Wellness Committee’s monitoring process. The nursing staff is in daily communication with each other regarding health issues of students as well as staff meetings. The Student Health Services Department supports the FSSD vision statement, “Excellence in Teaching and Learning for All” by keeping students and staff healthy. Healthy students and staff are better equipped to perform to their highest potential. District Nursing Coordinator Amy Fisher, RN, supervises medical needs for students as well as directs health education and training, professional development, health programs, health policies and school health compliance. Each of the seven FSSD schools has a clinic where children are seen by either a clinician or a licensed nurse. Eight full-time nurses serve the medical needs of the students. The Franklin Special School District is following the recommendations of the Tennessee Departments of Health and Education in its response to the H1N1 virus in our schools. In order to provide the safest environment possible in the schools, the state of Tennessee requires proof of immunization. In 2010, the State issued new immunization requirements. Please visit the State's Required Immunizations page to view the latest information. Also required by the State is proof of a physical exam for new students who have transferred from out-of-state. All of this information should be provided by your pediatrician on a required form available in Tennessee doctors' offices or at the Public Health Department.
The Student Health Services Department oversees annual vision, hearing and blood pressure screenings, and will arrange for other types of screening if it is medically necessary for either student or staff.
A variety of health-related professional development opportunities are provided to school staff members, including CPR and First Aid. Click here to read more about how school staff members are trained to best serve your child's medical needs. Student Health Services Staff
