Franklin Special School District Dress Code for grades 5-8

The FSSD/FMS dress code has been created with the idea of promoting a positive learning atmosphere and a wholesome attitude for each and every student. Safety, neatness, cleanliness, good taste, and common decency will be the guiding standard of appropriateness for all student dress.

The FSSD/FMS dress code will be in effect during the school year and summer school.

 

1.     Students are required to wear fold-down collared shirts.  Students may wear FSSD T-shirts on a school-designated day.  FMS students will be able to wear any FSSD T-shirts on Thursdays.

2.     All shirts must be tucked inside pants, shorts, skirts, or skorts.

3.     Only the top two buttons may be left unfastened.

4.     Shorts, skorts, skirts or dresses must be no more than three inches above the top of the knee.

5.     Pants must have a zipper or button closure at the waist.  No athletic, sport, recreational, or lounge shorts or pants are allowed.

6.     If pants, shorts, skorts, or skirts have belt loops, belts must be worn.

7.     FSSD related pullover hoodies or sweatshirts are allowed.  All other hoodies must be zip up and must be worn to where the collared shirt shows.

8.     Students may wear light weight jackets or button/zip up sweaters (i.e. cardigans, fleece etc.) if needed and must be worn to where the collared shirt shows.

9.     Students will wear clothing of appropriate size. Appropriate sizes are defined as no more than one size smaller or one size larger than the studentÕs actual clothing size. Pants, shorts, skorts or skirts must fit at the waist and must not sag or bag. (Sagging is defined as bottom wear being worn below the waistline.) (Bagging is defined as bottom wear being worn not size appropriate.)

10.  Jewelry etc. must not have the potential of disrupting the classroom environment. Undergarments and midriff shall not be exposed.

11.  Logos(writings/symbols), including but not limited to scrolling belt buckles or manufacturersÕ trademarks with writing or images of substance that are illegal for teens (i.e., drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products) or are otherwise offensive, lewd, indecent, vulgar, obscene, profane, gang related, or constitute racial/ethnic slurs, or disruptive to the school environment may not be worn. Pants or shorts with words or letters printed across the rear my not be worn to school

12.  Sunglasses, hats, scarves, hoods worn on head, bandanas, sweatbands, curlers, rollers, gloves, and caps are not to be worn during school hours.

13.  Skate shoes, house shoes, and pajama pants are not permitted at school. Laces on shoes or sneakers must be tied.

14.  Hair color, styles or makeup which is considered distracting is not permitted.

15.  No body piercing (except ears) or visible tattoos or dental decorations are permitted.

16.  ÒGangÓ related slogans, names, apparel, etc., are not allowed.

17.  Coats may be worn when entering or exiting the building. Coats shall not be worn in the classroom during the day. The administration will announce exceptions to the guidelines if facilities indicate the need.

The FSSD/FMS dress code will be enforced. The dress code is subject to amendment at any time at the discretion of the administration. Teachers will check for dress code compliance each morning. Any student who fails to comply with the dress code will be sent to the office where appropriate clothing will be exchanged for his/her inappropriate clothes. He/She will receive his/her clothes at the end of the day. School issued clothes must be worn when issued. If the FMS clothing is not returned, the item must be paid for by the students. Non-compliance will also result in a consequence. 1st offense will result in a thirty minute detention. 2nd offense will result in a one hour detention. 3rd offense will result in a three hour detention. 4th and subsequent offenses will result in days in AC and EAC.
